The Rara Lake is the largest on in Nepal and aptly called “the queen of the lakes”. The enigmatic lake is situated in the smallest and the most scenic national park, the Rara National Park in Nepal. The Jumla to Rara trek is a less trodden, exceptionally beautiful experience that takes you to the national park with much of its areas above 3000 meters.

Best Season:

Permits/Regulation:

  1. TIMS (Trekkers’ Information Management System) card: All trekkers must obtain a TIMS card before starting the trek. You can obtain the card from the Nepal Tourism Board office in Kathmandu or from the Trekking Agencies’ Association of Nepal (TAAN) office in Kathmandu or Pokhara. The cost of the TIMS card is USD 20 for individual trekkers and USD 10 for group trekkers.
  2. Restricted Area Permit (RAP): The Jumla to Rara region is a restricted area, and you need to obtain a RAP to trek in this area. You can obtain the RAP from the Department of Immigration in Kathmandu or from the immigration office in Surkhet or Jumla. The cost of the RAP is USD 100 for the first seven days and USD 15 for each additional day.
  3. National Park permit: The Jumla to Rara trek passes through the Rara National Park, and you need to obtain a national park permit before entering the park. You can obtain the permit from the park office in Kathmandu or from the park entrance in Jumla. The cost of the permit is USD 20 per person for foreigners and NPR 1,000 per person for SAARC nationals.

Day 13:  Departure

Day 01: Kathmandu to Nepalgunj

On the first day of your trek, you will fly from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj, a city located in the southwestern region of Nepal. The flight will take approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes. Once you arrive in Nepalgunj, you will spend the night in a hotel and prepare for the next day’s flight to Jumla.

Day 02: Nepalgunj to Jumla

On the second day, you will fly from Nepalgunj to Jumla, a town in the remote Karnali region of Nepal. This flight will take approximately 45 minutes and will give you stunning views of the surrounding mountains and landscapes. Once you arrive in Jumla, you will meet your trekking crew and start your trek to Danphe Langa. The first day of trekking will take you through forests, fields, and small villages. You will have the option to either spend the night in Jumla or on the trail.

Day 03: Jumla to Danphe Langa

On the third day, you will trek from Jumla to Danphe Langa, a small village located at an altitude of 3,500 meters. The trail is steep and challenging, passing through forests and meadows. You will have the opportunity to witness stunning views of the surrounding mountains and landscapes. Once you reach Danphe Langa, you will spend the night in a tea house or campsite.

Day 04: Danphe Langa to Chautha

On the fourth day, you will trek from Danphe Langa to Chautha, a small village located at an altitude of 2,800 meters. The trail is mostly downhill, passing through forests and small settlements. You will have the opportunity to witness stunning views of the surrounding hills and mountains. Once you reach Chautha, you will spend the night in a tea house or campsite.

Day 05: Chautha to Dhotu

On the fifth day, you will trek from Chautha to Dhotu, a small village located at an altitude of 2,400 meters. The trail passes through forests and fields, with views of the surrounding hills and mountains. You will have the opportunity to witness the local lifestyle of the people living in these remote areas. Once you reach Dhotu, you will spend the night in a tea house or campsite.

Day 06: Dhotu to Rara Lake

On the sixth day, you will trek from Dhotu to Rara Lake, a high altitude lake located at an altitude of 2,990 meters. The trail passes through forests and meadows, with stunning views of the surrounding mountains and landscapes. Once you reach Rara Lake, you will spend the night in a tea house or campsite near the lake.

Day 07: Explore Rara Lake

On the seventh day, you will spend the day exploring the area around Rara Lake. You can go for a hike to Murma Top for panoramic views of the lake and the surrounding mountains. You can also take a boat ride on the lake or just relax and enjoy the serene atmosphere. Once you are done exploring, you will spend the night in a tea house or campsite near the lake.

Day 08: Rara to Ghorasain

On the eighth day, you will trek from Rara Lake to Ghorasain, a small village located at an altitude of 3,180 meters. The trail passes through forests and meadows, with views of the surrounding hills and mountains. Once you reach Ghorasain, you will spend the night in a tea house or campsite.

Day 09: Ghorasain to Sinja

On day 9, you’ll trek from Ghorasain to Sinja, a small village located at an altitude of 2,440 meters. The trail will take you through forests and fields, with views of the Karnali River and the surrounding landscapes. Along the way, you’ll pass through several small settlements and see the daily life of the local people. Overnight, you’ll stay in a tea house or campsite in Sinja.

Day 10: Sinja to Jaljala

Today, you’ll trek from Sinja to Jaljala, a high altitude meadow located at an altitude of 3,530 meters. The trail is steep and challenging, passing through forests and meadows. However, the views from the top are breathtaking, and it’s worth the effort to get there. You’ll stay overnight in a tea house or campsite in Jaljala.

Day 11: Jaljala to Jumla

On day 11, you’ll trek from Jaljala back to Jumla, passing through several small villages and farmlands. This will be your last day of trekking, and you can take the time to reflect on your journey and the experiences you’ve had. You’ll stay overnight in Jumla.

Day 12: Jumla to Nepalgunj to Kathmandu

Today, you’ll fly from Jumla back to Nepalgunj, and then on to Kathmandu. This is your last day in Nepal, and you can spend it exploring the city, shopping for souvenirs, or simply relaxing. In the evening, you can celebrate your successful trek with a farewell dinner with your trekking crew. Overnight stay in a hotel in Kathmandu.

Day 13: Departure

On your last day in Nepal, you’ll be transferred to the airport for your flight back home or to your next destination. This marks the end of your incredible journey through the remote Karnali region of Nepal.
